We all know “ Arthur” is a remake of the movie launched in 1981 about a young spoiled billionaire played then by none other than Dudley Moore.
Although the American critics were not exactly convinced by the idea of the British charm, for which Russell is well known, the movie seem to have been enjoyed by the American public – or at least by the feminine side of it.
The surprise came when Helen Mirren (“The Queen”, “Red” and “The Tempest”) manifested her delight about working with Russell Brand. Russell may be charming and this role may be perfectly cut for him but according to the critics Dudley Moore’s shoes were not easy to fit. The English charm of Russell, said to be “toxic” in large quantities, was slightly tamed during this particular performance. If he could not equal Dudley Moore, at least he was less tempestuous than in his other movie performances.
Playing an alcoholic, naughty young rich guy seems to have fit Russell like a glove. What determined Helen Mirren to join this experience otherwise harshly crucified by the box office? The answer was: Russell’s charm.
Is the movie that bad? When you have a look at the statistics and notice that it was surpassed in the box office by none other than “ Hop” – the Easter Bunny also played by Russell Brand ( voice) one may think it actually …is.
However, the story is funny and the movie is surely fit to be viewed and laughed at. If anything , would be a fun experience to compare with the original we loved. No doubt you can enjoy it on Netflix pretty soon so don’t hesitate to watch and share your opinion with us.
Who knows? You may end up liking it.
